Michael F. BaccellieriI want to welcome you and introduce you to our company and its mission. Longbottom is one of the pioneer West Coast specialty roasters. We've been hot-air roasting quality high grown mild coffees for over 25 years now - blending, packaging, freshness-dating and shipping it to your individual order since the first day we opened in 1981.

Estate Coffees, Organic Coffees

Longbottom buys fair trade coffees, estate coffees, co-op coffees, and organic coffees which are shade grown, bird friendly and sustainable. Longbottom has been a certified organic producer since January, 2003. Our Cafe Equitas brand of coffees is certified organic by Oregon Tilth in accordance with FDA and NOP standards. As a matter of fact we were honored to have our roasting factory selected as a training location for organic inspectors.

There's been a lot of media attention and discussion in the industry about Estate coffees, organics, sustainability etc and that's a great thing. But there's a lot of misinformation being perpetuated within the industry and to the general public. I'm not going to touch on that here, but if you'd like more information about these issues I encourage you to read Estate Coffees and the Fourth Wave, which has some facts you might find interesting.

Environmental Responsibility

Being ecologically responsible is something we do here on a daily basis. We use recycled boxes to pack our orders. In many cases when deliver locally these recycled boxes are used 10 or 20 times over. We use biodegradeable popcorn starch packing peanuts and recycled newspaper packing materials. We use small and fuel efficient half-ton cargo vans to make our local deliveries. We use afterburner systems on all our roasters to reduce emissions. Much of our paper products that we use for printing are recycled.

Social Responsibility

Social responsibility is something else we take seriously. At Longbottom we believe that it is our responsibility to help economically disadvantaged coffee producers. We purchase and promote organic and Fair Trade coffees. We are also a proud sponsor of Coffee Kids, an international non-profit organization established to improve the quality of life for children and families who live in coffee-growing communities around the world. A percentage from the sale of every coffee bean you purchase from Longbottom goes to Coffee Kids on a monthly basis. It makes no difference if this coffee is Fair Trade, organic, co-op, association, or estate - Coffee Kids receives a percentage from every purchase.

So why do we do this? The people who run the Coffee Kids organization are experts. They know how to provide the education and tools needed to raise standard of living for the families of coffee farmers. Coffee Kids provides the most efficient and effective use of our charitable capital and enables us to focus on what we do best - roasting premium quality coffee and providing you with superior customer service. Our social responsibility includes giving and serving the needy right here in our local community.

We are also major contributors to organizations in Portland and surrounding areas like The Salvation Army, Union Gospel Mission of Portland and the Portland Rescue Mission to name just a few. We support local schools with low cost coffee for fundraisers. You can find a more complete list below.

We also believe it is our responsibility not only to provide a fun work environment but provide our employees with living wages, generous retirement benefits, and comprehensive health benefits, all of which promote their well-being and self esteem. Maybe this is one of the reasons why people come to work here at Longbottom and stay here. Many of our employees have been with us for 10, 15, and even 20 years.

Service

We also believe that when it comes to customer service, the old adage, the customer is king, still applies. We pride ourselves on first class service, unsurpassed quality and people who are truly committed to your success. We have an incredible staff who can help you with all the facets of your coffee business, from preparing French press coffee to pulling that perfect espresso shot. We are here to serve you. None of this is new, we've been doing this for a long time. If you'd like to learn more about our service, you can read a few testimonials. Many of these customers have been with us for years and become highly successful during that time.

Enjoy the rest of the website. If you have any questions please call our toll free number or email us. We love to hear from you! If you do call our toll free number during business hours, you're guaranteed to get a human being.

Thank you,

Michael B.
